Le Cameroun, pour l'année 2003, reste encore le plus grand consommateur de Champagne en Afrique.

Selon le bi-mensuel satirique panafricain “Le Gri-Gri International” (27 janvier 2004), le Cameroun serait toujours, malgré ses difficultés socio-économiques, les premier importateur africain des champagnes. Ainsi, dans un panorama au vitriol des plus grands consommateurs des bulles de l’élixir en Afrique, le journal de Michel Ongoundou Loundah révèle que selon les chiffres disponibles, – et datant de l’année 2003 –, notre pays aurait importé 250.000 bouteilles de l’élixir encore baptisé par notre confrère parisien “ l’eau de Bafoussam ”.
Si la publication panafricaine basée à Paris constate que la consommation camerounaise a baissé par rapport à il y a trois ans où l’on avait noté 320 000 bouteilles importées, c’est un indicateur qu’entre temps la crise économique a durement sévi. Il reste néanmoins que le Cameroun maintient sa triste réputation de plus grand consommateur de champagne en termes absolus. Il est suivi par le Gabon qui en aurait importé 106 000 bouteilles en 2003. En terme de ratio populations/nombre de bouteilles, le pays de M. Bongo Ondimba vient ainsi largement en tête. Avec en effet une population globale estimée à 1 million d’habitants ce ratio serait alors d’une bouteille de champagne pour dix Gabonais. Contre une bouteille pour 60 camerounais.
Enrichir l’économie occidentale
D’autres pays africains francophones pauvres sont au top des importateurs des bulles selon “ Le Gri-Gri International ”. Il s’agit du Bénin qui avec 53 000 bouteilles importées devant le Togo qui en aurait importé, au cours de la même période, et malgré l’embargo de l’Union européenne, 47 000 bouteilles.
De quoi observer, que pour la consommation de cette boisson de luxe, les plus forts en Afrique ne sont pas les pays les plus riches que sont l’Afrique du Sud, ou la Libye, ou encore le Nigeria le plus peuplé. Paradoxe d’origine culturel ou religieux ? Ou simple culture de la consommation outrancière des produits de luxe qu’on ne produit pas ? Peut-être du tout à la fois, mais surtout un indicateur sur les mœurs socio-politiques selon les pays.
Parions que l’augmentation par le gouvernement camerounais des taxes douanières sur ce produit pourrait inverser cette tendance. Encore que les plus gros consommateurs qui se recrutent au sein et autour de la bourgeoisie administrative locale (ministres, hauts fonctionnaires et hommes d’affaires, et leurs convives habituels), sont ceux qui sont le moins touchés par les mesures fiscales récentes au Cameroun
